1) Free, very safe, well planned, nice bus system. You can get anywhere in the county in less than half hour. I feel very safe letting the children ride the bus system without me to the library, to the store, to school sometimes, or just for something to do.
2) Trees. Many more trees here than in Utah County.
3) Established library. We enjoyed the small, new little libraries west of Utah Lake, and really enjoyed the Salt Lake County library. This one in Logan is different. It's larger. It's much older (just a fact). It has many more computers for patron use than we've had in the past.
4) We live in "the apartments" that have a pool and hot tub. Although there are others, in our little block that has 4 different apartment complexes, ours is the apartments where pool, hot tub, and weight room are the perks. Other apartments have perks such as granite countertops or something else. We very much enjoyed the swimming pool this past summer.
5) Ryan, Chiara, and Jonah. They all go to Utah State University, which is 2 miles from our apartment. Well, Jonah took this past semester off, but he still "goes" there. Recently, Ryan got a job at the on-campus bookstore. Below is a picture on USU campus.
6) Theaters. We have three major theaters. The Eccles Theater, the Cache Opera Festival House, and the Lyrical Theater. I don't know the difference, except what the names suggest, as we haven't experienced this part of the culture. Yes, this is definitely part of Logan's culture, particularly the Opera.
7) Logan is surprisingly small. Main Street runs straight through the whole length of Logan, and although it continues another 25 miles to Idaho on one side and becomes a highway running 35 miles through the pass to Brigham City, the section called Main Street in Logan is only 3 miles long.
8) Snow. Supposedly it gets REALLY cold here, and we have experienced it a bit a couple weeks ago - but supposedly in February it gets even colder (-20 degrees F, plus wind chill), we get snow that lasts! Tiny flakes constantly falling for all night and through a whole day. It is SO BEAUTIFUL! Right now we have a foot of snow, so it's not overwhelming, but it's white!
9) Mild Summers. I don't do heat well. I easily get migraines and sick to my stomach in July, particularly. In Logan it was hot, but I did not experienced either of my normal symptoms, and I was outside more often in Logan than I ever was in Utah County. It could have something to do with Utah County is SOOO arid, and the outskirts of Logan are rich farms built on a swamp, I've heard.
10) Temple. Right here in Logan. Very convenient and beautifully placed on a hill.
11) Anniversary Inn. This hotel has themed rooms. We went to Logan's Anniversary Inn a few years ago. Loved it. Then we toured the other rooms. Loved them.
12) Dollar theaters. Well, $3.50 theaters. Still a good price. SEVERAL full price (8.50) theaters ... but they are the older-style theaters .... not the fancy ones you might find in Sacramento area. When the movies are moved out of the full price theaters, we enjoy them at our "dollar" theaters.
13) We have a community choir here that is conducted by Jeppson (I think that's his name), who used to conduct the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and wrote many of their song arrangements. This community choir is smaller, but still very good and sounds very much like the Tabernacle Choir. I hope to someday be part of this choir.
14) Lots of factories. Gossner cheese factory, Fat Boy ice cream factory, Malt-O-Meal, Pepperidge Farm, ICON. There are others, but they are less known ... or are a bit farther away, like Coca-Cola and Western Family (both in Ogden, which is about an hour away).
15) Outdoor Recreation. We have 7 canyons to explore immediately available to us (within 8 miles), one of which goes to Bear Lake. Fly-fishing, camping, hunting, geocaching, archery, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, gun-ranges, boating, fishing ... these are very popular sports here.
16) Community Events. We haven't participated in any of them yet, except for the Pumpkin Walk in October. That was amazing! Hundreds of pumpkins lining the walk, and probably 50 life-size displays made with painted pumpkins, gourdes, and squash. My favorites were It's A Small World, Wizard of Oz, and of course cub scouts. Other community events: Novemberfest, Classic Car Festival and Parade, .... they say there's always something going on, and I look forward to be part of them .... someday.
17) Diversity. LOVE the diversity! People and families from every culture live here, and everyone gets along very nicely!
